CARMEN THE OPERA
Love Is a Rebellious Bird That Nobody Can Tame
The University of North Texas' Opera Works, the performance division of UNT specialized in Opera, was confronted with a significant obstacle: declining ticket sales. Within that year of 2022, a concerning 47%, signaled a broader trend of diminishing audience engagement. This challenge was compounded by the limited accessibility of traditional opera performances to diverse communities, particularly in populous areas like Irving, Arlington, and Denton, Texas. The goal of my design was to create a compelling Promotional poster that would pull in more people, especially younger Gen-Zers to get interested in opera again and be intrigued to see the Carmen opera.

Research & Inspiration
Combining Symbolisms and 1875 Aesthetic
To begin my ideation, I immersed myself in the art prevalent during the 1870s, the primary setting of the story. My research led me to concentrate primarily on 1875 black ink sketches, where I integrated symbolism from everyday animals and objects. This direction enabled me to establish a strong contrast between forms and utilize bold shading to express the profound emotional themes of Carmen, such as passion, love, and betrayal.

Sketches & Iterations
My ideation sketches explored the crow and roses, symbols often associated with love and freedom. I chose these specific symbols to metaphorically represent Carmen, encouraging viewers to form their own interpretations of the story's message.
